Case Free Station is an interactive workstation that transforms traditional hand-held phone protection into an individualized experience. At the cashew-shaped workbench, the artist customizes phone cases with unique shapes and colors for incoming guests. After a few minutes of waiting, these “customers” receive personalized caseless cases, with only four plastic forms molded and fixed onto the phone’s four corners. Not only does this simple system provide excellent shock protection and a smooth, bare-handed grip, but the act of handcrafting also evokes a sense of irreproducibility in both shape and color. The phone cases reflect the phone owner’s character while transcending the average phone’s homogenized, minimalist sculptural image in the post-iPhone era.
